Luuk Klomp new director of NWO’s Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES) domain

Luuk Klomp has been appointed director of NWO’s Applied and Engineering Sciences (AES) domain starting 15 January 2022. ‘To further increase the social contribution of groundbreaking research in the applied and engineering sciences. Who wouldn’t want that? I look forward to working on this goal with my passionate colleagues. I believe that my knowledge and experience in public-private research cooperation will come in very handy at NWO.’

Klomp is currently deputy director of Innovation and Knowledge at the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy. The ministry has been his employer since 2002, where he has worked as a manager in various departments, including in the management of the Top Sectors and Industrial Policy department. He originally studied economics. After graduating, Klomp became assistant professor of ‘economics and statistics’ at Erasmus University, where he later also obtained his doctorate. Before joining the ministry, he worked for a few years at Statistics Netherlands (CBS), first as a statistics researcher but soon thereafter as a manager.

Margot Weijnen, a member of NWO’s Executive Board and chair of the AES domain, on his appointment: ‘We are very pleased with the arrival of Luuk Klomp as the new director for the AES domain. He knows NWO and the AES domain well and brings a large and relevant network to the job. He is used to operating in the context of public-private cooperation and is committed to achieving social impact. With his power to connect and his experience in the world of knowledge and innovation policy, he can add substantial value to the strategic development of our domain and NWO.’
