Menno de Jong has been head of the Department of Medical Microbiology and Infection Prevention at Amsterdam UMC since 2020. In previous years he had the same position in the former AMC (Academic Medical Center Amsterdam)and VUmc (Free University Medical Center Amsterdam).
He was also Head of Virology at the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam for a number of years and worked as a medical microbiologist at the Leiden University Medical Center and the AMC at the beginning of his career.
Menno de Jong is a well-known face in the world of Infectious Disease Control and has been an active member of the Outbreak Management Team during the corona crisis in recent years. He wrote his dissertation on the treatment of HIV in 1996 and was appointed professor of Clinical Virology at the University of Amsterdam in 2007. His current scientific activities mainly focus on clinical and applied research into infections with respiratory viruses, such as influenza and Covid-19.
In his new position, Menno de Jong will continue to work as a professor at Amsterdam University Medical Center one day a week.
