A trusted partnership to identify Trinity College’s next Warden and Chief Executive Officer

Trinity College, the oldest residential college of the University of Melbourne, is a vibrant academic community comprising over 1,500 students and 260 staff from across Australia and around the world. Following the successful tenure of Professor Ken Hinchcliff, whom Perrett Laver assisted Trinity in appointing in 2015, the College once again engaged Perrett Laver to conduct a global search. The search sought an exceptional leader to serve as Trinity’s next Warden and Chief Executive Officer.

This comprehensive search encompassed senior academic and institutional leaders across Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The process focused on identifying individuals with the vision and capability to shape academic strategy, foster intellectual community, and oversee complex institutional operations. Individuals were identified who could navigate the unique intersection of academic and residential life, bringing a holistic and values-driven approach to student experience and development.

Perrett Laver supported Trinity College in appointing Reverend Professor Russell Goulbourne as their new Warden and Chief Executive Officer

Reverend Professor Russell Goulbourne has been appointed as the 9th Warden of Trinity College, bringing exceptional academic credentials and extensive experience across leading tertiary institutions. He holds a Bachelor of Arts, Master of Studies, and Doctor of Philosophy from Keble College, University of Oxford, and previously served at the University of Leeds (2000–2013) as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer, Professor of Early Modern French Literature, and Head of Department.

Russell’s leadership experience, alignment with the College’s vision and values, and evident enthusiasm for the Trinity community stood out throughout the selection process. An alumnus of the Trinity College Theological School and ordained in the Diocese of Melbourne in 2021, he is well positioned to lead Trinity as a globally excellent institution in service to the community.

I’m delighted to have been appointed as the ninth Warden of Trinity College, the University of Melbourne. I’m looking forward to joining the College in March 2026 and helping it to be the best it can be in the years to come
