About Cardiff University

Established in 1883, Cardiff University is one of the largest universities in the UK and a member of the Russell Group.

Based in the capital city of Wales, the university’s vision is to become a world-leading, research-excellent and educationally outstanding university with a transformative social, cultural and economic impact for Cardiff, Wales, the UK and the world.

As the largest university in Wales – and a major employer, with more than 7,000 staff – Cardiff University works with society, industry and government to help overcome the most urgent challenges of our times.

The successful candidate was Professor Wendy Larner, who joined Cardiff University after eight years at Te Herenga Waka.

In 2022, the University Council appointed Perrett Laver to lead the search for the next Vice-Chancellor and President of Cardiff University.

Following the successful tenure of Professor Colin Riordan who led the University for over a decade, this presented an exciting opportunity for an outstanding individual to join Cardiff and bring strategic vision and leadership to the University community.

After an extensive search exercise which engaged over 300 individuals internationally, a field of 33 individuals emerged, with five candidates being invited to final interviews with Cardiff University with a majority female shortlist.

An internationally respected social scientist, Professor Larner’s interdisciplinary research has transformed understandings of neoliberalism and globalisation.

She moved to Wellington from the University of Bristol where she had been the Dean of Social Sciences and Law and Professor of Human Geography. Following this success, Perrett Laver was also engaged to support the appointment of a number of additional leadership roles across the University.
