The University of Northampton is defined by a bold spirit and a deep commitment to social impact and responsibility. Since gaining university status in 2005, we have built a reputation as an ambitious and inclusive institution with a clear mission: to have a positive impact on the world through supporting aspiration, creating opportunities, and delivering impact.

Our 2023–2027 Strategic Plan sets a transformative agenda that will shape the next chapter of our development with people at the heart. Created through extensive consultation with our staff and students, the plan outlines four strategic priorities that guide all that we do: our staff, student experience, teaching and learning, and research – all underpinned by a purpose to deliver Social Impact. These priorities reflect our role as a modern, values-driven university committed to delivering benefit locally, nationally, and globally.

The importance of our place as the University for the county of Northamptonshire is critical. Our recent Economic Impact Assessment shows that we contribute over £300 million annually to the local economy, supporting thousands of jobs and helping to drive sustainable growth. We are a proud partner in the We Are Northampton campaign, working with others to promote the town and region as an outstanding place to live, work, and thrive.

As we look ahead with confidence and purpose, we are now seeking an outstanding individual to join our senior leadership team as Director of Marketing & Student Recruitment. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Becky Bradshaw, this is a pivotal role in shaping how we present ourselves to the world, engage with prospective students, and deliver on our strategic ambitions.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead the development of innovative and inclusive marketing and recruitment strategies that reflect our institutional values and priorities. You will oversee the University’s marketing, brand, UK student recruitment, schools and colleges liaison, and digital communications portfolios. A key focus will be to lead data-driven and insight-led campaigns that attract and support a diverse and talented student body, aligned with our mission to widen participation and promote social mobility.

We are looking for a strategic, imaginative, and emotionally intelligent leader with a strong track record in delivering impactful marketing and recruitment activity in complex organisations.

You will bring experience of digital transformation, brand development, and multi-channel campaign delivery, along with a deep understanding of the student journey and the factors that shape decision-making. You will be confident working across institutional boundaries, collaborating with colleagues across academic and professional services, and engaging with a wide range of external partners including schools, employers, and civic bodies.

Equally important is a commitment to the values that define the University of Northampton: inclusivity, sustainability, aspiration and trust. You will be someone who can authentically reflect these in your leadership and ensure they are at the heart of our brand and messaging. Our Strategic Plan places a strong emphasis on place-based impact, and you will play a vital role in communicating the distinctive strengths of our university, our region, and our contribution to wider society.

Joining the University of Northampton at this moment offers the chance to be part of a forward-thinking, student-centred institution with a clear and confident sense of purpose. You will help shape the external face of a university that is redefining what it means to be a civic university in the 21st century — one that works in partnership, empowers individuals, and contributes meaningfully to a fairer and more sustainable world.

If you are ready to lead with purpose, creativity and impact, we would be delighted to hear from you.

About the University of Northampton

We are one of the youngest universities in the UK but we are already leading the way in adding value to society, which we call social impact. We have won multiple awards for our work in this area, among others, but what matters the most to us is ensuring that our students and graduates have the opportunity to make their mark on the world too.

We want to break the mould of what Higher Education can be. This has led us to build a whole new University from the ground up that is designed to reflect the way that you actually learn rather than the way you are expected to learn.

Our Strategy

Strategy 2023-2027: Supporting Aspiration, Creating Opportunities, Delivering Impact

Our Strategy is a clear commitment to social impact, academic excellence and inclusive growth. Developed through wide consultation with staff and students, the strategy sets out four core values: inclusivity, aspiration, sustainability and trust, which guide all that we do.

Our purpose is to create meaningful social impact, locally and globally. We aim to transform lives through education, research, enterprise and strong partnerships with our communities and stakeholders. Our priorities reflect this ambition.

We are investing in our people, developing a vibrant, inclusive working culture that nurtures talent and supports wellbeing. For students, we are enhancing every aspect of the university experience, academically, socially and personally, to ensure they thrive and succeed.

Our approach to learning and teaching is shaped by what students will need in the future. We emphasise active, inclusive, research-informed education that builds knowledge, skills and social awareness. Our academic community is supported to innovate and collaborate, ensuring excellent outcomes.

Research is integral to our identity. We are focused on growing a high-quality research environment that delivers positive change and responds to the needs of society. Interdisciplinary collaboration and support for emerging researchers are central to this vision.

Foundational to our success are our campus and civic role, our modern ways of working, and our approach to finance and sustainability. We are committed to ensuring our systems, processes and investments support our people and priorities, making Northampton a university with purpose, resilience and impact.

Living and Working in Northampton

Living in Northampton

We have a growing, welcoming and diverse population living in Northampton. Perfectly situated just off the M1 in the East Midlands, we are within easy reach of London and Birmingham but don’t suffer the stresses and strains of big city life. We are proud to be England’s largest town and part of the newly created West Northants region.

We are surrounded by beautiful countryside and iconic stately homes in a county often described as the ‘Rose of the Shires.’ The area celebrates wonderful history and heritage; we have a great story to tell. Populated since the Bronze Age, we gained prestigious charter status back in medieval times and became a vibrant commercial trading centre.

We grew in stature during the industrial revolution due to our proximity to the iconic Grand Union Canal. In the late 1960’s, we were given a ‘new town’ designation and welcomed a wealth of new communities displaced in the post war overspill from London. Today we are the largest settlement within the new unitary authority of West Northants, with a population of 225,100 and bordered by the vibrant towns of Brackley, Towcester and Daventry.
