Appointment of Vice-Chancellor
Brimingham City University

Appointment of Vice-Chancellor

Introduction

Birmingham City University is an institution with a proud heritage and a hugely ambitious future. It is seeking an exceptional new Vice-Chancellor who will inspire and lead the University in the development and implementation of a new strategy for 2030 and beyond, maximising BCU’s vast potential.

The new leader will take on a university that has grown rapidly under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Philip Plowden over the past six years, from a £200 million organisation in 2016 to well over £300 million in 2023.

They will assume the leadership of an institution that is quite unlike any other.

The University’s STEAMhouse – home to its fast-emerging STEAM agenda – is part of its uniqueness, looking to provide solutions to tomorrow’s problems, while also connecting back to the University’s origins in 1843 when the Birmingham Government School of Design was founded to shape the needs of industry at that time.

Equally distinctive is the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, something no other modern UK university can boast, and its School of Jewellery, right at the heart of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. And then there is the Alexander Stadium, where BCU’s sports provision will move next year, ensuring a significant legacy following the hugely successful Birmingham Commonwealth Games last year.

There is so much of which Birmingham City University can be proud, but also enormous potential to go further. To take the University forward, BCU wants an outstanding leader, a team player who can get the best from its staff and students, while representing the institution’s strengths across the city and region, as well as on a national and global stage.

The next leader of Birmingham City University will have the balance of experience, credibility and acumen to recognise BCU’s strengths, while identifying and addressing the challenges and opportunities ahead. If that reflects your background and approach, and this opportunity excites you as much as it does us, we want to hear from you.
