Relaunching the Network
We have alluded over the last couple of newsletters to some changes taking place behind the scenes here in the Network team, as we strive to align our activities more closely with what members have indicated they would like to see from the Network.
We are focusing keenly on bringing our members Insight, Opportunity, and Connection to support your career development in the mission driven sectors that Perrett Laver works with. We work with a globally leading suite of organisations that we can help our members to connect with for executive and non-executive opportunities, and we are committed to providing insights and tools to equip you for success in leadership competitions.
You will note one major change is our name – the Perrett Laver BME Leadership Network is now the Perrett Laver RISE Leadership Network. We have been mindful of the Network name and brand in terms of inspiring our members, reflecting positivity, and the success we aim to support Network members to achieve in their careers, through joining with us here. We hope you like the new name and branding, and we will shortly be launching a website to gather the range of opportunities and events on offer in one new home.

Board Experience Opportunities
Perrett Laver’s Governance Apprenticeship Programme (GAP) was launched in 2021 in partnership with the higher education sector to address the lack of diversity at board level and of a diverse pipeline of board members in the sector. GAP connects talented individuals with the opportunity to shadow a board for one year, such that they are part of a sustainable pipeline of accomplished individuals who will strengthen the diversity and outlook of boards in the future.
We are shortly going to be launching the 2022 cohort of GAP apprentices, and this year we are expanding the opportunities available beyond higher education into the arts and cultural sectors. We are bringing this development to RISE Network members first – we will be opening the applications portal for potential apprentices officially next month but should you wish to find out more about participating (either as an apprentice or as a host organisation) then please do email the network at BMENetwork@perrettlaver.com.
You can find out more through the GAP website https://www.diversitygap.co.uk/ and read our 2021 impact report here.

Book Your Place at the 2022 BME Early Career Researcher Conference
Perrett Laver and the RISE Leadership Network are delighted to be sponsoring the 2022 Black and Minority Ethnic Early Career Researcher Hybrid Conference: How To stay In Academia, which will take place on 7th July.
Founded by RISE Leadership Network member Dr Bernadine Idowu-Onibokun and now in its 6th year, the conference is co-hosted by King’s College London and University of West London. This year’s theme is Making The Invisible Visible.
The underrepresentation of Black and Minority Ethnic staff in academia is noticeable as the student body is not reflected in the staff teaching them. Disparities in outcomes occur across the academic journey as observed in degree-awarding gaps for BME students and the underrepresentation of BME academics in senior roles. For example, currently, there are 22,795 University professors in the UK, from those 6,340 are women and from those only 40 are Black women.
By attending the conference, you will have the opportunity to hear how BME academics have navigated their journey, network, get a mentor and empower yourself through the workshops.
You can find out more about the speakers and book your place here.

An invitation: collaborate with us
We are always pleased to discuss how we may support members’ work in their own organisations and with their local staff networks. We are already speaking with some of you about supporting your in-house events and welcome the chance to work with more of our members on a local level, sharing insights into executive search, advice on applying for leadership opportunities, and supporting you to develop wider networks. If you would like to discuss collaborating with the Perrett Laver BME Leadership Network, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
