About Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited
Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI) is a limited not-for-profit company established and supported by the Government of Hong Kong. NAMI’s mission is to conduct market-driven, demand-led R&D in nanotechnology and advanced materials to catalyse technological development of these industries in Hong Kong and the Mainland; acquire and advance core competencies in nanotechnology and advanced materials for innovative and breakthrough technologies; and nurture and develop world-class research talent in nanotechnology and advanced materials to benefit the economy and society in Hong Kong.

NAMI’s next CEO would be responsible for leading the organisation through its next phase, building on its record of research excellence and impactful commercialisation to set the Institute’s direction for the next 5-10 years. The position presented an opportunity to make a significant, highly visible contribution to human knowledge and economic prosperity in Hong Kong and the region. Leadership of this unique research institute required candidates to meet a complex set of criteria, including deep familiarity with the relevant technological fields and industry sectors, strong leadership skills, outstanding business acumen, and thorough local and regional knowledge combined with a commitment to NAMI’s mandate to contribute to Hong Kong’s society and prosperity.
On the basis of our extensive record of successful work with Hong Kong organisations as well as the firm’s global experience supporting a variety of top research institutes, Perret Laver was engaged by NAMI to support this search. Given the need for the next CEO to excel at partnering with local research and industry, Perrett Laver conducted a focused search concentrated on candidates with the necessary scale of experience and close ties to the region. Out of a pool of 23 candidates generated through our search, the selection panel identified a shortlist of three whose expertise, experience and skills were best suited for the role. After a careful selection process the panel chose Mr. Andy Fung, who benefitted from a distinguished record of leadership in companies including IBM Lotus, SAP Sybase, Sun Microsystems, France Telecom Orange Business, and British Telecom along with a broad network in Hong Kong and the surrounding region.
Cross Sectoral Appointment
This appointment exemplified our ability to make appointments across sectors, in this case identifying a seasoned business leader whose skills and experience gained in global corporations could now be devoted to public-sector technology research and application. Just as crucially, Mr. Fung brought enthusiasm and passion for the public mission of the Institute.
