Welcome from the President

Thank you for your interest in Atlantic Technological University.

Atlantic Technological University (ATU) was established on 1 April 2022 following the merger of Galway/Mayo Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Sligo, and Letterkenny Institute of Technology.

We are a new University that builds on the excellence of our legacy institutions and their service, for over 50 years, to the Northern and Western Region. ATU is one of the largest multi-campus universities on the island, serving a diverse group of learners, staff, communities, and organisations from our region and further afield.

Our University stretches along the Wild Atlantic Way with nine campuses located in Galway, Mayo, Sligo, and Donegal. We are dedicated to enabling sustainable economic, social, and cultural development; connected to our region and with a mindset that reaches far beyond it.

Our students are central to our ambitions to deliver practice-orientated study, and research that seeks to address the major challenges facing society and the world.

Our achievements since designation are considerable, and they include: becoming members of a new European University Alliance, EU GREEN, which comprises nine European universities situated in more peripheral regions of Europe; working across multiple faculties in ATU and with the three Education and Training Boards in our region to develop and validate three new tertiary education awards; and expanding craft apprenticeship offerings to our Donegal Killybegs and Mayo campuses for the first time. Our new strategic plan is built on five Guiding Lights—Enabling Education, Engaged Research, Connected Ecosystem, Organisational Transformation, and Sustainability for the Future.

These lights illuminate our path toward becoming an internationally renowned university that enhances the quality of life in our region and creates a sustainable future for all.

The new phase of organisational development for ATU has led to ten new exciting opportunities on the University’s Senior Leadership Team and we would welcome applications from all suitable applicants.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of a team implementing the new University strategy, leading the effective transition to the new structure and embedding the University’s commitment to sustainable decision making and an equitable and inclusive culture.

I am very much looking forward to working closely with the new leadership to deliver the next chapter of our journey.

About ATU

Atlantic Technological University (ATU) is a multi-campus university, serving the Northern and Western region of Ireland and beyond.

ATU’s nine campuses cover a region of over 25,000 km², 36% of the national landmass, with 266km between the furthest spaced campuses. Although sparsely populated, with approximately 18% of the national population, there are several significant urban areas which create a wide range of backgrounds to engage with. The region accounts for 90% of the border area with Northern Ireland, meaning cross border economic activity plays a large role in driving local growth.

Serving over 26k students, through four faculties, ATU is unique in attracting students from every county in the country, but most come from counties where campuses are located. Each faculty offers programmes across six campuses and online, with ATU being the largest publicly funded provider of online education in the country. This allows ATU to be well placed to ensure a range of regional and national needs are addressed, including the upskilling of staff across a range of external enterprises.

The Northern and Western region of Ireland has fared worse than others, economically. The EU has downgraded its classification to “in transition”, resulting in a clear need for action to stem this decline.

ATU has a major role in supporting the prosperity of the region, working collaboratively with government, industry and community stakeholders to act as a catalyst for social, cultural, and economic development. By taking a lead role in providing access to higher education, research and innovation and industry engagement, ATU will contribute to improving the regional innovation eco-system.

ATU was created through the amalgamation of three Institutes of Technology (Galway-Mayo, Letterkenny and Sligo), resulting in immediate duplication of structures and processes. To mitigate this, many of the supporting departments have created interim structures, aligning specific functions to operate across multi-campuses.

Our strategic plan, covering the next five years, is the focus for the continued development of structures. The plan is encapsulated by five “Guiding Lights” — Enabling Education, Engaged Research, Connected Ecosystem, Organisational Transformation and Sustainability for the Future.

ATU is committed to embedding sustainability within all decision making and is an active member of EU GREEN, an alliance of nine European universities. Their aim is to create a European hub for sustainability within education, research and innovation, where initiatives are shared for both regional and global benefit.

Through its Sustainability for the Future – Vision 2040, ATU is committed to constantly improving sustainability on campus and throughout the university. It is crucial we embed sustainability in all our disciplines, operations and engagements, to achieve a sustainable and healthy planet, both for people and for the natural systems we share our planet with and rely upon.

The successful candidate will be expected to embed sustainability principles throughout their decision making. As a member of the senior leadership team, this role is fundamental is driving “Sustainability for the Future”, one of ATU’s five strategic “Guiding Lights.” Our Sustainability for the Future, 2024-2028 strategic objectives are in Governance and Accountability, Climate and Environment Action, Education and Research, and Community and Social Responsibility. This role will have significant input into developing these themes and collaborating across the University community to ensure ATU is recognised as a leader in sustainability and our graduates positively contribute to a more equitable, inclusive future firmly rooted in the respect and protection of our natural world.

Living in the North West

The Northern and Western region of Ireland offers a diverse range of experiences from bustling cities to the wild Atlantic coast. The region boasts outstanding natural beauty and cultural heritage with distinguishing features such as a high number of Gaeltacht communities, a significant North-South dimension and the Atlantic coastal islands.

With a diverse and dynamic economy which blends traditional industries with emerging sectors, the region is a key contributor to Ireland’s economic growth and development.

The Northern and Western Regional Assembly aims to become “the most connected region in Europe” with ATU strongly committed to playing a key role in supporting this vision.
