About UK Research and Innovation

UKRI stands for UK Research and Innovation. It is a public body established in 2018 by the UK government to consolidate and enhance the country’s research and innovation system. UKRI brings together the seven Research Councils, Innovate UK, and Research England under a single umbrella, creating a more integrated and strategic approach to funding and supporting research and innovation across various disciplines.

UKRI’s mission is to convene, catalyse, and invest in close collaboration with others to build a thriving, inclusive research and innovation system that connects discovery to prosperity and public good. It covers a wide range of areas, including the arts and humanities, social sciences, physical sciences, engineering, medical research, and environmental science.

Through its funding and support, UKRI aims to address some of the most pressing challenges facing society, such as climate change, health, and economic development, while also nurturing the next generation of researchers and innovators.

Since 2020, Perrett Laver has been engaged to support UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) on a campaign to appoint Council Members across its nine research councils.

In addition to senior and strategic leadership experience in a relevant area of research and/or innovation, candidates were expected to demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the mission and priorities of UKRI and the respective council.

The campaigns also explicitly sought to support UKRI’s diversity goals, with a clear brief to deliver genuinely diverse candidate fields for each council, including with respect to gender, ethnicity, sector, career stage, and geography.

Results & Conclusions

1.

Multiple Appointments

The campaign has been hugely successful to date with 202 candidates invited to interview (49% female, 20% ethnic minority background) resulting in the appointment of 74 new Council Members across all of UKRI’s councils.

2.

Sample of Appointments

Of the total 74 appointments made to date,  53% are female and include Steve Bagshaw, Professor Anne Ferguson Smith, Professor Ijeoma Uchegbu, and Dr Neil Parry to BBSRC; Chris Ganje, Tunde Olanrewaju, Caroline Plumb, Dr Annette Doherty, Professor Simon Weeks, and Dr Mark Treherne to Innovate UK; Dr Andy Griffiths and Professor Simon Hollingworth to MRC; and Dr Angeli Möeller and Hitesh Thakrar to STFC.
